I understand that San Diego is in a crisis with being over budget and that areas of our city operated departments need to be reviewed -- however, the SDPD Mounted is so much more than just a "budget" tax dollar item! It's a intangible connection and link to the public! I believe that SDPD can still maintain their SDPD Mounted unit in some form of function and NOT eliminate it altogether. Perhaps a reduction of the unit size is something that can be reviewed in lieu of scrapping the unit as a whole! Please keep the SDPD Mounted for San Diego! The public loves them! They serve a valuable service to our City!!
ReplyDeleteSome members of our society are not compliant with the laws of the land. We need mounted police to continue keeping our parks and beaches safe places to take are families and children. The mounted police is the most efficient way to get this done. The resulting low crime levels we currently experience in our parks and beaches is because our mounted police are effective. Please keep our city safe and keep the mounted policy force operational.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!

As the daughter of a former mounted Police Officer for the Albuquerque Police Department, I understand the value a mounted unit has. The advantages a horse patrol has in crowd control, search and rescue, and public out-reach are invaluable. A mounted unit is an asset to any city.

Having worked for the SDPD Mounted Unit in the early 90's, I know firsthand how valuable this unit is to our region. Balboa Park would be a much more dangerous place without this unit. There would be much more crime our parks and beaches too if this unit is disbanded. And, while we fortunately aren't known for riots in this City, there is absolutely no better, non-violent method for crowd-control (and we do have plenty of protests and the like) than police officers on horseback. When you consider that the savings from cutting this unit are a mere "drop in the bucket," while the advantages are huge, it makes no sense not to save it. The Citizens (and in particular a wealthy fan) saved this unit during the City's last fiscal crisis, and it can be done again!
ReplyDeleteBeing a native Californian, I can't remember a time when there wasn't the Mounted Police. I know the pride I feel every time I walk up to them and thank them for their services and for keeping us safe. This unit is no less valuable than those officers serving in the war; they are just doing it here!
ReplyDeleteI am astounded that the SDPD could even think of disbanding the mounted unit. The decision to disband this unit not only affects those officers and their horses, but all of us and every single visitor that comes to our city. The mere presence of this unit in Balboa Park is a symbol of safety in itself. Do all of us a favor and reconsider.
I am in full support of helping keep this program intact. Vivian
ReplyDeleteThe loss of the mounted police unit would be a real loss to the city. These officers and their horses contribute so much in so many ways, not least of which is exposing city folks to horses and all their wonderful attributes. Please reconsider your decision.
ReplyDeleteBrenda,
ReplyDeleteThe program has a calming effect on the community which also helps in limiting crime. What is the cost going to be if they take the program away. We have fund raisers for all types of crisis in the world, I think we should have one to help make up for the difference in the budget to keep our mounted police. We need them and appreciate all they do.
Please keep the mounted patrol active! They perform a wonderful service for San Diego and they are a terrfic positive image for the police department!
ReplyDeletePlease keep this program alive! They are a neccesity and cannot be lost!
ReplyDeleteJust a walk in Baloboa Park is lovely enough, but made safer and more amazing has been the days when we have seen the mounted police units. Their presence alone is a comfort; not to mention the officers' effectiveness with crowd control and the awesome opportunity to meet these amazing service people and animals. Fighting crime is expensive, but removing effective units due to a budget crisis will only hurt San Diegans in the long run!
ReplyDeleteMaintain the SDPD Mounted Unit for all San Diegans; to know the safety provided, see the magesty, and do so for years to come. It would be a crime to disband these units. I am a firm supporter to keep this program!
